Who / what is Karaoke Dick?
Karaoke Dick is my super-eclectic Karaoke Jockey operation. I basically host Karaoke at parties and gigs, but with way more cool songs than you expect. I also have cool videos to go along with songs.

Where can people find Karaoke Dick?
I pop up around the place, so the best way to find out where it's happening is signing up to the facebook page.
I've done residency at Cassette Nine, and also appeared a few times at SFBH and Mighty Mighty in Wellington.

How do you source the backing tracks?
I buy the regular backing tracks that are produced but of course they get a bit limited. You don't find Peaches on a Karaoke Machine do you!? So in that case I remade her tune, which was kinda easy cause she loves lo-fi! But I've done a lot of songs and they are all different. I'm a musician and also have production skills, so I can re-record tracks quite faithfully. Sometimes a track can come about from the original instrumental. There's various ways to skin the Karaoke cat really, but it takes some dedication. Thankfully I discovered this year I'm not alone. I have some friends out there who I trade exclusive custom tracks with. So my list is growing rapidly now.

What is the most popular song?
It's funny I get asked that and it's not very common for one song to get requested repeatedly. But some that jump to mind are "No one knows" QOTSA, MIA 'Paper Planes', Ramones 'Beat on the Brat', Beastie Boys 'Fight for Your Right to Party' Britney Spears 'Toxic'.

What is the most horrendous karaoke song you have ever seen performed and why?
That's easy. It was actually before I began hosting, and the singer was... ME! My friend Margot requested it and said I had to sing it. It was 'Oh Superman' by Laurie anderson. It's the longest song in Karaoke history, with also the fewest lyrics. I had to go..'Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh..' for ages. I could see malaise in the faces of the other patrons turning to bloodlust, and so I apologised at the end of the song, standing up on a stool and stating that was the worst thing I'd ever done in my life. Which appeased them.

Is it true that you are an air guitar champion?
Well, actually I came thrid place in the Air Guitar Championship New Zealand 2007. I love the third place trophy. The winner actually sabotaged the results with a rent-a-crowd. I beat him in the Auckland competition so he got a crowd to love-him up, and heckle me! What a jerk! I split my pants on stage so that was funny. I took the third place trophy with a massive hole in the back of my pants.

Does Karaoke Dick have any advice for the people reading this interview?
Absolutely! If you don't know it by experience yet, Karaoke is actually an amazing thing for bringing about inner peace and happiness. No joke! Honestly if you're feeling a bit whack you have a little belt on a song you love and suddenly everything seems right. Plus it can get you babes.
